So Abram went, as the Lord had told him...He took his wife Sarai...and they set out for the land of Canaan and they arrived there. Genesis 12:4-5

Abram had an undoubtedly special call from the Lord. In three short words, the Scriptures tell us Abram's faithful response to God's call-
"So Abram went..."

We are those people. God called. We went.

Maybe your story took a little more poking and prodding than Abram, maybe you just knew in your heart and you went. Whatever the circumstances, you went! Don't miss that Sarai is included in the going. It doesn't tell us whether she was ecstatic about going, whether she was forlorn, or whether she was a bundle of anxiety. She most likely can relate to any myriad of the emotions we encounter in the going. Our husbands, in fact, receive the call, but we are very much a part of the going.

So, what does God say to us. Maybe you've already had that heart to heart with God. Maybe He has revealed a calling of your own, something special he set out for you and placed on your heart (Ephesians 2:10). Perhaps you're still wondering what your special place is, what God has planned for you. This is what we know from God's promises in His Word-

He has a plan for you as an encouragement to your husband. This is a very special ministry all in it's self. This is God's call to each of us as wives. (Ephesians 5)

He calls us to each be a part of His Body, each in our own way. (1 Cor. 12) He loves our uniqueness and proclaims us necessary!
Just as Sarai, we'll have difficult moments. Sarah, after all, was the laugher, the doubter. Sarah's response to God was "You can't be serious." (Heidi's personal paraphrase) But take a look at Hebrews 11:11 and take heart, sister!

"By faith Sarah herself..." Sarah! Faithful! God honors her in the hall of the faithful, despite her doubt, despite her struggle. God looks at her and sees one marked as redeemed by Christ. And what a special place in history He gave her.

In this we can take encouragement and know- we have a place and a purpose also. We simply go.

This column "Sarai's Journey" is a special spot where we can chat pastor's wives stuff each month. Look for articles on many of the joys and struggles we find in serving Christ through serving our ministry husbands.

God's blessings to each of you! How I'd love to meet you, know for now that I pray for each of you daily.
