Basic Coaching is listening and asking powerful open-ended questions.

Coaching really isn't anything new. See how Jesus used a form of coaching: "Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"
In the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus lets the hearer figure it out so they own the answer instead of telling them the moral to the story right away.

In the story of the Good Samaritan, Jesus lets the hearer figure it out so they own the answer instead of telling them the moral to the story right away. Luke 10: "But who do you say that I am?" Jesus' question to Peter in Luke 9. "What is written in the law? How do you read it?" Jesus to the lawyer in Luke 10 Why did Jesus do this? Jesus' process was to walk beside his disciples, ask them hard questions, give them responsibilities and debrief the experience.

One on One Coaching is based on learning theory:

We Learn:

10% of what we READ

20% of what we HEAR

30% of what we SEE

50% of what we SEE and HEAR

70% of what is DISCUSSED with OTHERS

80% of what is EXPERIENCED PERSONALLY

95% of what we TEACH TO SOMEONE ELSE

From William Glasser – author of reality therapy.

What adults learn on their own initiative they learn more keenly and permanently than what they learn by being taught. In other words, "Your own insight is more powerful than my advice." Malcolm Knowles, the "Father of Adult Education"

Therefore the coach directs the dialogue and leads the leader to own the problem and to focus – on the exact problem, on the various options, and on specific action steps. Then the coach holds them accountable by incarnational listening, asking power open-ended questions, help in the leader develop action steps and becoming the agent for accountability.
